Hollywood has presented its Oscars nominees – how does this relate to the Code? It is good to recognize those who have achieved at the highest level, which is the intent of the Oscars. In fact, one of the positive things about the Oscars is that they do not just recognize the actors or directors, but all of the behind the scenes individuals: the costume designers, sound and lighting, special effects, camera work, writing, editing and endless roles we do not even understand! One of the things the Code says is that “I will be a positive influence on the members of the team.” Who are some of the individuals on your team that are not recognized, but who make a valuable contribution to the success of the team? It may be a second-stringer whose effort inspires others, it may be a person whose consistency is something everyone relies on, or it might be other characteristics that others easily take for granted. Can you look for such individuals and find a way to acknowledge them publicly? When we do, not only are we being a “positive influence on the team,” but everyone will work harder, knowing that all efforts are seen and valued.
