General Petraeus has admitted that he had an inappropriate relationship with a woman. How is this like the Code? There is a tendency to think that things like this scandal (or what happened to Joe Paterno) only happen to famous people, because we read about them in the paper or see the stories on television. This is not true. We all say and do things that we regret, and it is always possible to make a mistake that will ruin our lives. Alcohol related incidents, fighting, arrests, automobile accidents (too often resulting in someone’s death), or unwanted pregnancies are examples of things that can happen at any age and that can lead to a life-long regret. “I will display caring and honorable behavior off the field…” is what the Code says. The challenge for us is to understand that small things can have lasting effects, and that living with “honorable behavior” is a minute by minute, day by day challenge. What are the mistakes you have made that seem to stay with you? What do we all have to do to ensure that we will live honorably? What can you do when you are tempted to make a mistake?
