Ben Affleck directed the Best Picture “Argo.” As a very young man he had won an Oscar for “Good Will Hunting” but has not been able to live up to that promising beginning over the past 15 years. In his acceptance speech he said, “it’s not if you get knocked down, it’s if you get back up.” Whether he knew the source of that thought or not, it was Vince Lombardi who said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get back up.” Since that is what Ben said, it is clear that at least in his own mind he has been knocked down, but that he did not give up. A part of that being knocked down may have been the fact that he was not nominated for Best Director. In any event, the question for each of us is where are we? Are we on the floor, getting back up or standing tall? When have you been knocked down? Did you get back up? The Code says, “I will give my best effort…” and when we are knocked down is when our best is required.
