Concussions, Refugees and the Code

The number of retired NFL players who suffer from brain damage as a result of the game continues to grow, and with it the concerns for young athletes playing the game. Concussions, small and large, can occur in many sports besides football, so it is more than a football issue. Most of us are not medical experts, but we want to be responsible and to use our best judgement in youth sports. Meanwhile (changing the subject), in Geneva, Switzerland, world leaders are trying to raise $9 billion to assist in the Syrian refugee crisis. Interestingly, the Sochi Olympics cost $50 billion. The role of money in every aspect of life, including sports (from FIFA to college football to Super Bowl commercials) continues to be a concern of many. How do we use our wealth as individuals and as society? We mention these two timely issues to remind ourselves that our actions – the things we actually do, not talk about – are the result of the values that make up our character. What are the issues that challenge you as a coach or as an athlete?  What role can you play either locally or in a larger way?  It’s important to reflect on the values of the Code and to see the ways in which they determine how we act, as individuals, teammates, and as members of society. Together we can all make this a better world.
