At Obama’s inauguration Beyonce was much criticized for lip-synching the National Anthem. There was a power outage at the SuperBowl after her half-time show (no connection). Announcers wondered how the teams would respond to this unexpected happening. What does the Code have to say about all this? Both are examples of adversity. Adversity comes in many forms: it may be as the result of a mistake (her not singing live), it may come when a key player is injured at the beginning of a game, or a season. The issue is how we respond to adversity. The first tenet of the Code says that “I give my best effort in practice and in competition.” The key to that tenet is “in practice.” In other words, we have to develop the habit of doing our best. When adversity comes, it is easy to quit. But those who have a habit of giving their best effort will always be undeterred. When was the last time you or your team faced adversity? How did you respond?
