The NFL has “second string” referees calling the games because the regular officials are on strike. Some are upset because they think the quality of officiating has been compromised. A problem every athlete and every coach faces every season (no matter who the officials are) is the possibility and the reality of bad calls. How do we respond to a bad call by the official? While it is unfortunate whenever a bad call or controversial call occurs at a critical moment, we know that such calls – good (favorable) or bad (unfavorable) – are an inherent part of the game. Good sportsmanship requires that we respect the authority of the official, and when we have a complaint, that it is made in an appropriate, respectful way. Can you think of particularly controversial calls that have been made in recent years in your games? How were they responded to? Think about the ways in which you might handle situations in which you would want to speak to the officials. Is there a role for the captain?
