At the state track and field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, West Liberty-Salem runner Meghan Vogel was about to win the 3,200 meter run on Saturday, June 2 because the only person ahead of her with 200 feet to go, Arden McMath, collapsed from exhaustion. But, rather than pass her for the victory, Vogel stopped, picked her up and helped her stagger across the finish line. Would you have done that? Since it is against the rules to assist another runner, they were both placed in the last two places, rather than the first two. Vogel, however, who also won the 1,500 meter said that it was more satisfying to help a fellow competitor than to win the race. The Code talks about “being a positive influence on the other members of the team” but this is on the other team! The Code also talks about conducting ourselves with honor. More than anything, this is a story about “Winning More Than The Game!”
