The purpose of the Code for Living is to help us develop our character, leading us to become our best selves. I heard a woman on TV say that courage is not something that one gets in a split second. Courage is gained “brick by brick” she said. It takes courage to build character because having character means being willing to stand up for something in the face of opposition. That’s not easy; it takes no courage to say something that you know everyone will agree with. It takes courage to say things, or stand for things, with which you know some will disagree. That is why people are silent – they “lack the courage of their convictions.” Is there a time you have acted or said something that you knew some people – that you wanted to like you – would not agree with? Is there something going on in your school or on your team that you feel strongly about but are silent? Or, to take a different kind of situation: is there a person that others don’t like that you can befriend? Building character, like courage, is a brick by brick process. What is one step you can take today that will add a brick to the formation of your character?
