$$$$, Cheating, and the Code

Was anyone surprised that there was another NCAA scandal, this time involving shoes and college basketball?  Why are we not surprised?  Why do people cheat?  These are good questions to ask your team.  Here are two more:  What do we lose by cheating, even if we are not caught?  What does the Code say about this?  The Code says, “I will compete within the spirit and letter of the rules of my sport.”  We know what the rules are, but what is meant by the “spirit” of the rules?  Do you try to live by that higher standard or do you try to find ways to “get away” with things?  It is important to emphasize to your team that we make little choices all the time, but it is those little choices that shape who we really are.  Do you think you can fool others about who you really are?
